PT Kereta Indonesia (Persero) API is the major operator of public railways in Indonesia. It is wholly owned by the Government and pays track access charges to the Government. Non-governmental railways in Java retained their paper existence until 1958, when all rail lines in Indonesia were, nationalized, including the deli railway, which the Perusahaan Negara Kereta API (PNKA: State Railway Corporation).

On the 15 September 1971 in Perusahaan Jawatan Kereta PNKA API (Bureau railway company), restructured in Perumka was reorganized (Perusahaan Umum Kereta API: public Railway Corporation) on January 2 1991. Perumka PT Kereta was converted on 1 June 1999 API (Persero).
